With cooler weather and holiday festivities approaching quickly, it might be easy to put your health on the back burner. This season, take time for yourself and work on staying healthy. Schedule your preventative screenings now before the year runs out. You'll feel better for it!
Consider these tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to enjoy healthier holidays:
- Stay active. If you can’t engage in regular exercise, take a few laps around the shopping center parking lot or inside stores, organize a group walk at gatherings, or use stairs when you have the opportunity.
- Eat healthy. Consume small portions of rich holiday favorites, filling your plate with fruits and vegetables. Make healthier versions of holiday foods by using less salt, fat, and sugar.
- Plan holiday activities that don’t involve eating. Volunteer in your community, try winter hiking, or organize indoor games with family and friends.
- Avoid viruses. Talk with your doctor about the vaccines you may need, cover coughs and sneezes, take a mask with you when traveling, wash your hands frequently, and avoid touching your face when in public. Should you get ill, call your doctor for recommendations. Schedule your flu shot now!
- Quit smoking. Give yourself the gift of a smoke-free life. Call the Florida Quit Line at1-877-U-Can-Now (1-877-822-6669).
- Learn your family history. During family gatherings, take the opportunity to talk about your family health history. Share information you gain with your doctor.
- Manage stress. Don’t let the holidays take a toll on your mental health. Stay active, connect with others while also taking time for yourself, practice relaxing meditation, and get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.
