Stay Healthy during the Fall

Summer is over and Florida’s cool weather is right around the corner. Capital Health Plan (CHP) wants you to be as healthy as possible all year long! Consider these tips from the American Heart Association to keep your body (and your heart) in tip top shape this Fall:

  • Take care of your health. If you haven’t seen your primary care doctor this year, make an appointment. As the cooler months are typically the cold and flu season, consider these tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help prevent seasonal viruses:
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are sick.
    • Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Wear a mask to help prevent viruses from spreading.
    • When out in public, avoid touching your face and clean your hands frequently with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
    • Get vaccinated. Talk with your doctor about the best vaccine(s) for you and those you love.
  • Stay active but do it safely. A brisk hike or leaf-raking session might be just the ticket to feeling invigorated, burning some calories, and boosting your immunity. Avoid cold injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia by wearing layers of clothing, donning gloves and a hat, and staying dry with a waterproof layer if there is a chance of rain.
  • Stay hydrated. When you are working out in cooler weather, you may not feel as thirsty as you do in the warmer months. It’s important to stay hydrated, so drink water like you would in the summer.
  • Watch out for added calories, especially in drinks. Hot chocolate and pumpkin spiced lattes can be loaded with unwanted sugar and fat. Challenge yourself to find lower calorie versions of your favorite snacks, desserts, and drinks.
