Men’s Health

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, men die an average of five years earlier than women. At Capital Heath Plan, we know the importance of men’s health to help maintain strong relationships, set a positive example, and be able to fulfill responsibilities.

While some steps to being healthy apply equally to men and women, others are particularly important for men. Consider these ideas from the Healthwise® knowledgebase to remain as healthy as possible:

  • Live a healthy lifestyle.

    • Avoid all forms of tobacco.

    • Enjoy a nutritious eating plan with a Healthy Heart or Mediterranean diet.

    • Be active.

    • Achieve or maintain a healthy weight.

    • Don’t overdo alcohol. The standard limit for men is two drinks per day or 14 drinks per week.

    • Get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If your sleep isn’t restful, talk with your doctor.

  • Get regular health care. Having a primary care doctor and going for routine care is an important part of men maintaining their health. Talk with your doctor about the interval of appointments, exams, and screening tests that are right for you. This may include:

    • Family and personal history

    • Skin cancer screening

    • Colon screening

    • Depression screening

    • Prostate screening

    • Testicular exam

    • General physical exam

    • Lab work

    • Vital signs such as blood pressure

    • Immunizations

    • Eye exam

With awareness, education, and shared decision-making with your doctor, you can be your best by taking charge of your health!
