With the warm weather upon us, gather the family (or a group of friends) together this summer for some fun and fitness. Here are some easy and enjoyable ideas from the American Heart Association (AHA) to start getting active today:
- Schedule time to enjoy the outdoors! Find a nature trail or bike path.
- Plan some playtime. Take a walk or play a game of bowling, catch, or miniature golf.
- Choose active toys such as balls, kites, bicycles, or jump ropes.
- Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours per day for children. Limit adult screen time, too!
- Plant a vegetable garden to enjoy the outdoors and encourage good eating habits.
- Make chores fun and active. Rake leaves or do home projects together as a family.
Remember that outdoor heat can be challenging, especially when the humidity is high. Follow these AHA tips for safety in the Florida summer:
- Try to avoid being outdoors during the hottest time of day, from noon to 3 PM.
- Hydrate before, during, and after an outdoor activity.
- Dress appropriately. Light-colored loose-fitting clothing can help keep you and your family cooler. Consider a hat with a visor and sunglasses.
- Listen to your body and take breaks. It can take time to adapt to the outdoors if you are used to being in air conditioning.
- Check with your doctor before spending time outdoors if you have a chronic condition or are on certain medications that affect your body’s response to heat.
- Exercise indoors when the weather is unbearable. Go to a mall, gym, or community center. Be resourceful in finding indoor activities that promote fitness.
Eat healthy in the summer with cool meals and snacks! Try these family-friendly ideas from the AHA:
- Chilled or frozen fruit
- Homemade ice pops made from fruit, fruit juice, and/or fat-free or low-fat milk
- Cold salads that contain heart healthy veggies, beans, and salmon or tuna
- Chilled crispy raw vegetables with a light, cool dip
- Cold sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice or with slices of cucumber or citrus
