CHP offers wellness programs that are free for members. Members may access classes directly by dialing the phone number listed in the program description. If you need additional information, you may reach the Health Promotions Department at 850-523-7310.

Heartsaver CPR Course

The Heartsaver CPR Course teaches anyone how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child, and infant victims. Students learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. The program also includes instruction in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a valuable life-saving device found in many public settings. CPR classes are held at the Southeastern School of Health Sciences at 243 Office Plaza Drive. To schedule your CPR class, please call them at 222-0020.

Making the Decision to Quit Smoking

This decision is the first step for a healthier future. Capital Health Plan is here to support you through your “quit” journey. Choose one or more of the options that best suits your lifestyle. If you have any questions please contact the Health Promotions Department at 850-523-7310.

Options

  1. CHP Health Coaching: CHP members may contact a health coach by dialing 850-383-3400 and speak directly to a coach regarding stopping tobacco use. Members may also log onto CHP Health Coaching by following the links to CHP Health Coaching on this website. Located behind the “Healthy Living” tab, an interactive module on stopping tobacco use is available. A plan and follow-up newsletters are developed specifically for the member.
  2. Florida Quit Line (877-822-6669): supported by the Florida Department of Health. This telephone support line provides educational materials and telephone counseling to those interested in smoking cessation.
  3. Freedom from Smoking Class: The American Lung Association of Florida offers their Freedom from Smoking® program on line at www.ffsonline.orgexternal link icon. This online program allows you to complete the program at your own pace, while still receiving valuable tips and tools to help you break the nicotine addiction. The program also teaches you about remaining tobacco free after you complete the program. You may also call 1-800-LUNG USA to receive additional support.
  4. Quit Smoking Now: a 6-session free program offered by Big Bend Area Health Education Center. This is an evidenced based program that incorporates the Clinical Practice Guidelines for treating tobacco use and dependence. Nicotine replacement therapy, intensive counseling and relapse prevention are discussed. A monthly follow-up support group is offered for relapse prevention. Class members must attend all sessions and be on time. Please do not register for a class that will interfere with another engagement on your schedule. All classes are 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Those interested may receive more information and/or register for a class series by calling the Big Bend AHEC at 850-224-1177.

Diabetes Prevention and Weight Management Program

Capital Health Plan offers a 17 week weight management series based on the National Institute of Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program. Participants in the CHP Diabetes Prevention and Weight Management Program receive training in diet, physical activity and behavior modification. Anyone wishing to improve their health by losing weight is encouraged to participate.

Gareth Dutton, Ph.D., assistant professor with the FSU College of Medicine leads the program. Dr. Dutton has experience leading weight management classes from a behavioral change approach. He is assisted by additional health professionals who have an interest in weight management.

Please call 850-523-7310 to register. There is no co-pay or referral required to participate. You do not need to be pre-diabetic or diabetic to join. Classes will meet at the Governor’s Square location of CHP (1491 Governor’s Square Blvd) in the auditorium.
